  2. ABUSE • 5,000 reports in Cobb County per year • 1/30 minutes • 8/10 parent • ½ < 7 yrs. • 90% adult prisoners abused-cost to society? • 73% sexual abuse over time > 5+ years • ¼ girls < 16 yrs. • 1/6 boys • 66% fatalities preventable

  3. ABUSE • TARGET: Female 10-14 • Emotional hardest to prove; has greatest long-term affects • Attributes to juvenile delinquency • Poor school performance • truancy

  4. SIGNS OF ABUSE • Come early • Leave late • Sad • Very loud < > very quiet • Rocking, sucking, biting , ticks, compulsions, phobias

  5. CONTRIBUTING FAMILY FACTORS • Domestic violence • Young teems > parents – lack of experience • Alcoholism/addictions meth 90% addictive 1st time using • Lack of job • No parenting training/skills • Unclear boundaries – frequent coming/going • Sexual abuse

  6. How Schools Can Help… • Clear codes of conduct • Be a role model • Call police if in danger • Recognize the signs • Follow reporting procedures • Improve self-image of student • Institute child abuse awareness programs

  7. How Schools Can Help… • Support community programs • Encourage open communication • Create an environment of tolerance • Give positive feedback • Education parents about their roles • Set realistic students goals: celebrate success • Create opportunities to express empathy
