Railroads Impact on Washington • Trans-Continental Railroad meant that more people could travel faster to Washington. • More people meant that cities in Washington kept getting bigger. • Once enough people came to Washington by railroad, the territory became a state.
Facts on the Railroad • The first train was made in 1815 • The first locomotive for use on railways was imported from England in 1829. • Railroad working helped to increase amount of jobs • From 1865-1900, 200,000 miles of railroad track was laid • Connecting railroads helped make Washington a state in 1889 • In 1910, almost 50% of people in Washington were immigrants • Many immigrants that worked on the railroads in the west coast were from Asia
