I. Bay of Pigs Invasion A. 1959, Fidel Castro took control of Cuba, cut diplomatic ties to the US, and began negotiations with the USSR. B. The CIA trained Cuban nationals to overthrow Castro. C. April 1961, Americans and Cuban nationals invaded Cuba and the attack was a total disaster. D. The world questioned the US’ international intentions and Kennedy’s ability to lead.
II. The Berlin Crisis A. Kennedy met with Khrushchev and felt bullied and badgered by the Soviet leader. B. Kennedy asked Congress for 2 Billion dollars to increase the size of the Military. C. In response to the military preparation by the US and also to prevent future defections, the USSR closed East Berlin to the free world by building the Berlin Wall in 1961.
III. Cuban Missile Crisis A. U-2 spy planes discovered preparations in Cuba to build nuclear missile launch sites. B. The US feared the close proximity of a nuclear threat. C. US navy ships forced Soviet ships to return to Russia because they had nuclear missiles destined for Cuba. D. JFK demonstrated his ability to lead and his unwillingness to go to war.
