3 Levels of Oral and Written Language Structures • Global Level: In oral language this is the prosodic quality. Includes facial expressions and gestures. Written language is more formal and, remember, is decontextualized. • Level of words within phrases: Think about the physical break markers in written language as opposed to the seemingly lack of breaks in oral language, except when we pause for breaths, etc. • Level of sounds and letters within syllables: Think back to phonemes. This is where we are matching letters to sounds.
