Nervous System Introduction!! First – Our Brains!!
Activity Time: The Uncontrollable Foot! • GET OUT YOUR NOTEBOOKS • Draw a Graph / chart that looks like this: Explain why this happens!
Stand up! • Hold a pen or pencil in your right hand. • Rotate your right foot clockwise in small circles…. DON’T STOP! try to draw a #6 on your paper. What happens?
PREDICTIONS!!! • Before trying other combinations (left hand, right foot, etc.,) make predictions about what you’ll be able to do easily, and what you WON’T be able to do. • Why? Discuss answers with the people around you, and explain why this happens… then continue!
Explanation: • The cerebellum located at the base of the brain controls the coordination of voluntary movements. • Nerve fibres from the right side of the brain cross over in the brain stem to the left side of the body, and vice versa.
Therefore: The right side of the body is controlled by the left side of the brain, and the left side of the body is controlled by the right side of the brain. E.x. Stroke victims: Damage to one side of the brain effects the opposite side of the body!
Why can’t you draw a 6??!! When drawing a 6 with your right hand, the left side of the brain has instructed the hand to perform a counter-clockwise motion. The right foot and right hand can easily make the same motion, but cannot perform the opposite motion at the same time! It’s easy to move the opposite foot, though... Why??!!
Implants in the brain… Think about the future and write down some ideas…! • At what point are brain implants too far? • It’s OK to help solve people’s problems and disabilities… • Think of ideas to integrate technology (computers, bionics, etc.,) and design something to enhanceyour capabilities as a person, athlete, student, worker, etc. • Where does the future of biotechnology hold??!
Biotechnology Debates!! • Where should we set limits on the future of advancements in biotechnology, and modifying our brains / bodies to improve our abilities as a species?? • FOR: We should set limits on neural implants; it should only be used to help people with disabilities! • Against: There should be no limits!
