Expectations Techno-optimistic “Engineering science and technology is a driving force to sustainable economic and social development.” UNESCO “[We need to] draw the world’s leading scientists and engineers into the challenges of the poorest of the world.” J. Sachs
What do we do? • Question Take it personally - make conscious choices to change the world as engineers Ask why the world is the way it is and how engineers have made it so
What do we do? 2. Explore Learn about the sources and perpetuating factors of poverty and global injustices See the world through the different ‘lens’
What do we do? 3. Understand Recognize our own competency (engineers possess some relevant skills, but we lack many important ones)
Case Study – Solar Cookers • Alternative energy source • Reduce wood consumption • Health benefits • Reduce deforestation • Prevent erosion • Less time spent collecting fuel
Case Study – Solar Cookers • Operate only in midday when sun most intense • Families prepare food in evening when sun low • Solar cookers function but not when socially appropriate
HumEng is built on… • “Do no harm” • Competency Awareness • Appreciation • Cooperation “If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, let us walk together.” Native Australian
“the engineer ought to step out of his narrow technological enclosure and apply his proven effective methods to urgent economical, political and social problems that must be solved if his technology is to serve mankind” Herbert C. Sadler
Expectations in HumEng Module • Listen to CBC radio broadcast • NOTES: PG 34 If you want to continue the discussion, email us for a bi-weekly meeting that we will conduct contact us! Imran Ali: imran.ali@ce.queensu.ca Jamie Miller: jamie.miller@ce.queensu.ca
