We are at war And the opposition has targeted the youth
Their tactics: • 1) Hit the emotions, preferably before they have the intellectual capacity or skills to fight back. • 2) Divide and conquer; isolate and create such shame that no one speaks about their individual battles.
Our tactics: • Expose their fraud, give people the knowledge they need to • Recognize it • Run from it • Run for support
This stuff sticks like tar And it does not clean off easily if at all
The Church says: • “Blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God” • Pornography and masturbation are linked and feed off one another. • The habit of pornography and masturbation makes it impossible to see the spiritual joys of heaven; here or later. • The sin can be forgiven, we can grow and regain our happiness, but it is not likely to be as grand an adventure as it could have been.
Science says: • Pornography permanently affects the brain • Pornography is addictive • Pornography gravely harms our ability to relate to others • Pornography affects those who are closest to us
New technology has turned young men into lab rats Pornography has never before been as widely accessible as it is to this generation
Neurons that “fire together, wire together” in the brain And it is all a “use it or lose it” organ
Sense stimuli “mold” the brain • The brain’s job is to form pathways and patterns of thinking and acting. And this is why habits are so powerful. • The more we use a pathway, the stronger it becomes. • Adolescence is a particularly critical period for forming these pathways.
“out of control” is not a good place to be when making decisions Porn manipulates your emotions and makes you make decisions that you would not ordinarily make
Young are hit harder • There is a part of the brain that is needed for thinking rationally that does not develop fully in men until 21.
The brain has a separate place for emotional memories • Whatever is stored in this emotional memory is stored more permanently and more vividly • This is how pornography enters the brain and how it leaves a more permanent emotional mark.
Pornography is not like a drug, it is a drug. Pornography produces epinephrine (adrenaline), testosterone (an endogenous steroid, men’s flight or fight hormone), endorphins (endogenous morphine), oxytocin (a bonding peptide strongly associated with feelings of love), dopamine, serotonin, phenylethylamine…
With its drugs, pornography can pave well lit, superhighways in the brain that dictate much of the traffic And all of these drugs are supplied “on demand”; they are all just a memory away.
Addictions often have fierce cravings and withdrawals • Who does not want to be in control of themselves? • Who desires to be manipulated?
Addiction can cause permanent changes to the brain • If you were to chop off your foot; would you expect it to grow back. • The drugs abused in addiction to pornography cause changes of this kind in the brain.
“Draw partner!” Fast forwarding the movie or changing the channel is not fast enough
Effect on women: • Women see pornography as a total betrayal • Pornography is the antithesis of what they see in marriage • If you want to be the man that your future wife hopes to marry then dominate your urges to see other “women”.
Both faith and science agree that pornography is the pits So use the best of both to stay out of it – or to break out of its hold once it bites.
If you are not in it – don’t! • God is more powerful than the devil; victory is assured if we take the courageous path and run! Put an electric fence around you! • Build stronger relationships – especially with God. All doctors who work with this agree that this relationship is not “just like any other” relationship. We draw a lot of strength from our love for God and Mary.
Don’t play games: a little bit is too much! • It does not take a lot of pornography to form compulsive desires to see more • Once a month is sufficient to pull us into addiction • It can work its way up to a behavior that takes over our life at the cost of family, job, friends
Never forget that we are on the winning team! We may lose some battles, but if we get up and fight again, we do not have to lose the war – God’s team will win!
