What do the grades mean? I was a straight A student in highschool, but now I got a B. What does that mean?
What do the numbers mean? • 90-100% = A • 80-89.999 = B • 70-79.999 = C • 60-69.999 = D • Below 60 = F
How does my grade compare with other students’ grades? • A = extraordinary • B = above average • C = average • D = below average • F = failing
What does an A really mean? • Receiving an A on the exam means your work was very, very strong. In a typical freshman level college course, only about 10 percent of the students earn an A. • In this class (REL103) the percentage is usually a little higher, but not much.
What does a B really mean? • Earning a B on the exam means your work was above average. You performed better than most of the students in the class. • On a typical REL103 exam, somewhere between 15% and 20% of the class will earn a B.
What does a C really mean? • Earning a C on the exam means your work is at an acceptable level to pass the course but is not particularly strong. • The percentage of students who receive the C grade varies greatly from one class to another, being less than 15% in some classes, but as much as 30% in others.
What does a D really mean? • Earning a D on the exam means your work is below average. Most of the students in the class scored higher than you. • Usually only a small percentage of the class receives the D grade, perhaps about 5%. • You should seek academic assistance if you received a D. You may want to also consider one of the extra credit options.
What does an F really mean. • Earning an F on the exam means that you need to pay serious attention to your grade. You are in danger of failing the class if your work does not improve. • Scoring an F on only one of several exams, though, is not a reason to loose hope. It is a reason to seek help. • If you failed this exam, you may want to consider one of the extra credit options.
Grades are markers of progress • Receiving a high grade is a reason to be proud and should encourage you to continue the strategies that led to the high score. • Scoring low on the first exam is a warning that you should take proactive steps to increase the quality of your work. You should think carefully about how to prepare effectively for the next exam. A low score is not a reason to give up.
