Characteristics of Living Things • 1. Made of Cells (the building blocks or basic unit of structure and function of living things) • Prokaryote- pro=before and kary=nucleus • First cells on Earth (cyanobacteria) • Eukaryote- eu=true and kary=nucleus

2. Reproduce • Survival of the species preventing extinction • Individuals do not have to reproduce • Asexual- single parent through mitosis Child is identical to parent • Sexual- two parents through meiosis gamete formation
3. Contain Genetic Information • DNA-deoxyribonucleic acid found in the nucleus of the cell • Controls the cell • Identical twins have the same DNA
4. Grow and Develop • Single cell- grow only • Develop-cells multiply and differentiate as in fertilize egg zygote fetus infant
5. Obtain and Use Energy • Metabolism- all chemical reactions that occur within the cell • Autotrophs- auto=self and troph=feed These are the producers. Convert abiotic factors into biotic factors through photosynthesis
Heterotrophs- hetero=other and troph= feed • Primary consumer= herbivore-plant eater • Secondary consumer=carnivore-meat eater and/or omnivore-eat both plants and meat • Decomposer-obtain energy from dead organisms remains (bacteria and fungi)
Cellular Respiration- cell breaks down glucose releasing energy (ATP) in the mitochondria
6. Respond to Their Environment • Stimulus- a signal to which an organism responds • Organisms that adapt to changes in their environment have a higher survival rate
7. Homeostasis- Maintain a stable internal environment • Body temperature 98.6°C (sweat and chills) • CO2 level high, breathing rate increases • 8. Evolve or change
