BASIC RULES • Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory. • READ & Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ASK YOUR TEACHER BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE ACTIVITY. • When first entering a science room, do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so. NO food or beverages allowed in the laboratory. • No fooling around in the laboratory. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited. • Do not wander around the room, distract other students, startle other students or interfere with the laboratory experiments of others. • Keep work area clear and clean up your area at end of lab or before leaving class. • READ all labels carefully. Know what you are using • Dispose of all chemical waste properly. Never mix chemicals in sink drains. Sinks are to be used only for water. Check with your teacher for disposal of chemicals and solutions. Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment including: first aid kit(s), and fire extinguisher. Know where the fire alarm and the exits are located. Report ALL accidents & spills immediately to the teacher. Broken glass SHOULD NOT be thrown in the trash. There are red containers for broken glass disposal.
Know the meaning of these symbols • Eye Safety • This symbol appears when a danger to the eyes exists. Safety goggles should be worn when this symbol appears • Clothing Protection Alert • This symbol appears when substances used could stain or burn clothing
And These… • Thermal Safety • This symbol appears as a reminder to use caution when handling hot objects. • Electrical Safety • This symbol appears when care should be taken when using electrical equipment
And These… • Chemical Safety • This symbol appears when chemicals used can cause burns or are poisonous if absorbed through the skin. • Sharp Object Safety • This symbol appears when a danger of cuts or punctures caused by the use of sharp objects exists.
And These… • Fume Safety • This symbol appears when chemical reactions could cause dangerous fumes. • Biological Hazard • This symbol appears then there is danger involving bacteria, fungi, or protists.
Do you know the difference? OPEN FLAME This symbol appears when care should be taken around open flames. FLAMMABLE use of an open flame could cause a fire or an explosion HOT SURFACE
