BACKROUND • The GMC generic standards for training (The Training Doctor, Feb 2011) state that induction is mandatory:- “Every trainee starting a post or programme must be able to access a departmental induction to ensure they understand the approved curriculum; how their post fits within the programme; their duties and reporting arrangements; their role in the inter-professional and inter-disciplinary team; workplace and departmental policies and to meet the staff.”

  3. BACKROUND • Gold Guide 2010 clearly links standards with gaining and retaining training programme approval: “Speciality training programmes/posts, including those in general practice must conform to the training standards set by GMC in order for speciality training approval to be granted”

  4. Health Boards Responsibility • Patient safety is paramount! • Doctors arrive at different stages in their careers. • Varying level of competency. • Doctors in training deliver considerable service work, particularly out of normal hours. • Most vulnerable time for patient care.

  5. Health Boards Responsibility • Ensure all staff are fit to practice!. • Ensure staff do not undertake duties outside their competency!.

  6. Health Boards Responsibility • Pre-employment checks. • Ensuring assessments and annual appraisals are up to date. • Provide trainees with a named clinical/educational supervisor. • Providing a generic and departmental induction. • Mechanism to address doctors in difficulty.

  9. What is Induction ? “An occasion when someone is formally introduced into a new post/organisation especially through a special ceremony”

  10. What is Induction ? “ a period of training during which a new trainee learns about the organisation they are working for and the job they will be doing”

Service & Rota • Hospital Structure. • Theatres & place of work. • Rotas/Shift structure – Banding, leave, swaps. • Tier structure • Department personnel – lead roles, secretaries. • On-call Duties – Roles, handovers, test calls. • On-call rooms – combinations/keys. • Guidelines (Intranet) - ITU, Paediatric, Obs., Major Incident

  25. General Principles • Interactive- establish rapport! • Confucius (450 BC):- “Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I will understand”

  26. General Principles • Interactive – establish rapport! • Tailored – specific packs for specific grades! • Well delivered – enthusiasm, good speaker, show good knowledge of trainees needs. • Well structured – not too much detail! • Feedback

Summary • Vital to ensure patient safety • Equip new trainees with the skills needed to operate safely, appropriately and to the satisfaction of their supervisors as soon as they arrive in clinical areas • Evidence of the content and attendance of generic and departmental induction submitted to ‘Wales Deanery’. • Needed to fulfil training requirements and retain training programme recognition.
