  3. The Executive Branch • Main Purpose—Enforce Laws • Only Representative of the U.S. • Consists of: • The President • The Vice President • The President’s Cabinet

The President • Qualifications: • Must be 35 years old • Must be a natural born citizen • Must be a U.S. resident for 14 years • 4 year term • Maximum of 2 terms (22nd Amendment) Passed by Congress March 21, 1947/Ratified Feb 29, 1951 “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of President more than once.” • Salary--$400,000 per year • Why do you think citizens chose to limit the power of president this way? • Is limiting the number of terms one can be elected President a good thing?

Duties/Powers • Commander-in-Chief of the Armed forces • Foreign Affairs: make treaties (provided 2/3s of the Senators present agree); nominates Ambassadors; receives foreign representatives • Appoint officials in executive and judicial branches (President’s cabinet and justices) • Grants pardons • Passes or vetoes legislation passed by Congress • Delivers a State of the Union Address once a year that explains a legislative plan for the coming year

Vacancy • In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or inability to fulfill the duties of president, the order of succession is as follows: • Vice President • The Speaker of House • President Pro Tempore (Senate) • Cabinet (Starting with the Secretary of State)

Presidential Cabinet • Members nominated by the President and approved or rejected by the Senate • Dates back to the beginning of Presidency itself: Washington appointed a cabinet of 4 people • Purpose: to advise the president on any subject that he might require related to the duties of each member’s respective office.

Cabinet Members (15) • Secretary of State – manages foreign affairs • Secretary of Treasury – manages nation’s finances • Attorney General – enforces U.S. laws, chief legal officer • Secretary of Education – manages federal education • Interior • Labor • Commerce • Commerce • Defense • Housing & Urban Development • Transportation • Energy • Health & Human Services • Veterans • Homeland Security Washington had 4 cabinet members, and now there are 15 of them. Why do you think the number of cabinet members have increased? Do you think it is necessary to have 15 cabinet members?

  9. Electoral College • Method of selecting president • 538 total electors (3 for D.C.) • 270 = majority • Electors = # of Rep. + # of senators • IL: 20 electors (18 + 2) Do you think that the Electoral College should be used to select a president or should it be popular vote?
