What is ELAC • Each school with 21 or more English learners (El’s) must form an ELAC committee. • The English Learner Advisory Committee is a group of parents that provides advice to the school (principal and staff) about the programs and services for El’s.
Who Can Participate in ELAC • Any parent can participate, or be a member of the ELAC committee • On the committee, the percentage of parents of English learners is to be at least the same at the school. Group Composition
What is the Purpose of ELAC Program Services Student success Participate in discussions and workshops designed to help you identify the most effective way to support your student. • To provide parents of English learners opportunities to learn about the programs offered to their children.
Benefits of ELAC • Parents can express and share their concerns and successes with other parents. • Their presence at the school will let their student know that their parents understand school policies and programs. • The recommendations made by ELAC are given to School Site Council- the decision making committee of the school.
ELAC Agenda Items The following items are required by the State. ELAC advices the school on the following: Review the results of the Language Census/R30 report (language assessment, identification & re-designation) Advise the principal and staff on the school programs and services provided to El’s Advise the school (and SSC in writing) on the development of the School Plan (SPSA) and the budget • Elect a representative to be a member of the District English Learner Advisory Committee • Receive training on the roles & responsibilities of ELAC • Participate in a review and the development of a needs assessment, including ways to improve attendance
