Prevalence of Autism Autism is fairly common, occurring in about 1/88 children. It is more common in boys than girls. In other countries, rates vary from around 1/100 to 1/1000. Autism rates in the United States have been on the rise. This can be attributed to two things: 1. A rise in autism due to environmental factors such as pollution and living conditions. 2. More cases of autism being diagnosed. With better diagnostic tools, more children with autism get diagnosed. In the past, they may have not gotten a diagnosis of autism.
