What is autism? • Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills.
Social Symptoms • Children with autism can have difficulties with situations including: • Pretend play • Social interactions • Verbal and nonverbal communication
Communication symptoms • Cannot start or maintain social conversation • Communicates with gestures instead of words • Develops language slowly or not at all • Does not adjust gaze to look at objects others are looking at • Does not refer to self correctly • Repeats words or memorized passages • Uses nonsense rhyming
Social interaction • Does not make friends easily • Does not play interactive games • Is withdrawn and shows lack of empathy • May treat others as if they are objects • May not respond to eye contact or smiles, avoids eye contact
Behaviors and responses • Acts up and has intense tantrums • Gets stuck on a single topic • Has a short attention span • Has very narrow interests • Shows aggression to others or self • Uses repetitive body motions • May withdraw from physical contact • Has unusually high or low senses
Quick facts • Most parents of autistic children realize that something may be wrong with the child at around 18 months and seek help at around 2 years of age.
Quick facts • In some cases, children with autism can appear normal before age 1 or 2 and unexpectedly ‘regress’ and lose language or social skills that they have already learned. This is called regressive autism.
Quick facts • Autism tends to affect boys 3-4 times more than girls • Several studies have shown that there is no correlation between autism and the MMR vaccine • There is no biological test, they base criteria from the specific book, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV. • Some people with autism develop seizures
Various causes • Autism is a physical condition that can be linked to abnormal biology and chemistry in the brain. • Genetic factors • Diet, digestive tract • Mercury poisoning • The body’s inability to properly use vitamins and minerals • Vaccine sensibility
evaluations • When a child is being evaluated for autism they are receiving a complete physical and nervous system examination as well as: • Communication • Language skills • Motor skills • Speech • Success at school • Thinking abilities • Genetic and/or metabolic testing
complications • Autism can be associated with other disorders that can affect the brain, for example: • Fragile X Syndrome • Mental Retardation • Tuberous Sclerosis
