Environmentally Friendly Fine Machining Process of Wood Wen-Ching Su* Yiren Wang and Huoh-Jong Shiau Dept. of Forest Products Science, National Chiayi University, 300 University Road, Chiayi(600), Taiwan. Taiwan China
Aim of work and methods • A self-designed two-step surface planer with oblique angles of 15° and 20° used to machine China-fir, hard maple and red oak. • The surface quality between one-set and two-set oblique cutting will be explored. • The machined surfaces were compared to sanding and planning.
Results It could produce different chips for the same oblique angle in cutting softwood and hardwood. The peak of roughness profile was near the center line, that is, the latewood did not protrude the earlywood on the machining surface of surface planer. Fig.1 Chip formation A B C Fig.2 Surface roughness A-sanding surface, B-planning surface, C-oblique cutting surface The surface structure of wood was crushed or torn after planning. The damage surface could removed by the two-step oblique cutting A B C Fig.3 SEM observation of machining surface
Conclusions • The chip formation of China fir was flat and the others were spiral. • The surface quality obtained by the two-step oblique cutting was better than the sanding surface. • The tactile impression of oblique cutting surface was smoother than sanding. The planning surface processed by oblique cut once more could remove the deformation layer of surface to show the wood structure clearly and obtain a more fine and smooth surface.

Aim of work and methods To quantify and qualify structure of particleboard supporting a laminate to obtain the best results possible in machining even for not perfectly sharp tools. In this investigationthe relationship between surface structure of laminated particleboards and machining effect are presented. Quality of machining was estimated as a stresses dispersion in the laminate on the wide surface of the board. tool laminate
Conclusions Carried-out investigations confirms the necessity to homogenize the board’s structure in case of full support of the covered laminate. It can improve the quality of machining of laminated particleboards.

Fukuoka University of Education,Laboratory of Woodworking Introduction Axial deviation in a deep hole Development of a deep boring system for wood which prevents axial deviations in holes is important. Difficulty in bolt joint operation A deep hole for bolt joint
Fukuoka University of Education,Laboratory of Woodworking In this study The objective of this study was to examine the effect of annual rings on the axial deviation. Based on the experimental data An automatic deep boring system of wood for controlling the axial deviation of holes was developed.
Fukuoka University of Education,Laboratory of Woodworking Fig. Relationship between AE andθ Results Within the range from 15 to 25 degrees in the angle between the boring direction and the annual rings, the amount of axial deviation of a hole showed the maximum value (2.7mm). A correspondence between the axial deviation of hole and the average signal of the AE generated in boring was recognized.
Fukuoka University of Education,Laboratory of Woodworking Fig. Outline of system in this study The automatic deep boring system which adopted step-backing control using the average signal of the AE as a signal to monitor the axial deviation of a hole was developed. This system was composed of a monitoring part, a boring system, and a personal computer (PC) for control of the entire system. From the result of the verification experiment, it was found that this system could decrease the amount of axial deviation of holes compared with non-control system.
