Some Statistics • Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in February 2012 was 9.4 percent, down from 11.1 percent in December 2010. • State’s unemployment claims have decreased from 730,000 to 346,000 since February 2010. • The number of new jobs created since January 2011 is nearly 70,000.
DEO’s Mean Green Team • A Labor Market team within DEO’s Workforce Services, the “Mean Green Team”, have enhanced the services available through Florida’s online job portal. • Florida’s online job portal allows for employers to identify their job opening as being a green job, and allows applicants to search for green job openings by keyword and by area. • Job Portal is available on Employ Florida.com

Strike Team Examples • DEO Visited with the Following Communities to Address Community Needs & Economic Development • Port St. Joe – Port Economic Development & Potable Waterline Replacement • Madison County – Economic Development Marketing & Enterprise Zone Issues • Columbia County – Rail Spur Permitting on Catalyst Site • Suwannee County – Recruiting a Manufacturing Company to a Catalyst Site
Kennedy Space CenterPlanning for Redevelopment • State Agencies, including DEO and DOT, collaborated with NASA on a joint planning effort for the reuse and redevelopment of the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). • The final report was presented in December 2011 to headquarters in Washington, D.C. to receive approval of the future development concept. • In 2012, KSC and NASA will begin implementing the final development concept and preparing the master plan for KSC, to be finalized in early 2013.
Florida’s 2012-2017 Statewide Strategic Plan for Economic Development • Completed the statewide series of 11 Regional Forums to gather strategies and recommendations from local stakeholders for the creation of the Strategic Plan • More than 1,000 workforce partners from the public and private sectors attended meetings from the Panhandle to Miami • Feedback from the meetings will be used to enhance Florida’s 5-year Statewide Strategic Plan for Economic Development
Rural Economic Development & Tourism Summit • DEO held one of the statewide regional forums the day before the Summit, gathering input from the rural communities regarding Florida’s 2012-2017 Statewide Strategic Plan for Economic Development. • DEO participated in the Rural Economic Development and Tourism Summit, held by Opportunity Florida in March 2012. • DEO has more than 30 Programs & Initiatives that Provide Funding, Incentives, & Technical Assistance to Rural Communities.
