Expectations Prior To Kindergarten • Be able to say first and last name when asked • Be able to follow a direction given by an adult • Be able to sit and listen for ten minutes • Be able to focus on a task for five minutes • Be able to demonstrate self-help skills for snack time • Be able to demonstrate self-help skills for bathroom use and hand washing

4. Preparation For Kindergarten *Encourage independence with self-help activities *Talk about school in a positive way *Discuss anxieties and reassure your child *Encourage any attempts to read, write, and count *Practice opening lunch bags, lunch containers, typical snack containers, juice boxes/juice bags *Discuss the lunch menu and the choices for “hot lunch” prior to each school day *Practice snapping, buttoning, and zipping clothing and tying shoes *Discuss use of bathrooms, sinks, and the importance of washing hands properly *Discuss the importance of following the school rules

5. A Typical Day In Kindergarten *90 minutes of Language Arts (Reading Readiness, “Treasures”, Phonemic Awareness, Writing, Listening Skills, Story Time) *60 minutes of Math *Integrated Science and Social Studies *5 “Specials” per week (Music, Art, Health/P.E. twice weekly, Library/Computer Lab) ~ 44 minute period

6. Full Day Program *Full Day session is the same as Grades 1 through 4 8:55am –3:25pm *44 minute special * 20 minute recess# and a 30 minute lunch# * Snack Time # pending legislation

Kindergarten Curriculum Mathematics: Growing With Mathematics Reading: Treasures, Making Meaning, Core Literature Writing: Interactive Writing, Journal Writing with Inventive Spelling Integrated Science and Social Studies Our Kindergarten Curriculum is based on the Math and Language Arts Expectations set by the CT Department of Education

Special Education Programming In each elementary school, professionals from the Department of Special Services provide supports to children with identified disabilities according to their Individualized Education Plans (IEP). If you have concerns with your child’s learning or educational experience, please contact your child’s classroom teacher. Concerns will then be shared with the special education team if necessary.
