What you really need to know! When you read the problem, say “and opposite of” for the minus sign!
Example 1: -5 Find 9 - 14 Think: 9 + (-14)
Example 2: -18 Find -10 - 8 Think: -10 + (-8)
Example 3: 19 Find 15 – (-4) Think: 15 + 4
Example 4: -3 Find -10 – (-7) Think: -10 + 7
Example 5: What is the range for Wyoming? 114 + 66 = 180°F 114 – (-66)
Example 6: 6 Evaluate: m – (-2) if m = 4
Example 7: -12 Evaluate: x - y if x = -14 and y = -2.
Example 8: 7 Evaluate: p + q – r if p = -11, q = 6, and r = -12.
