Definition: RtI is the practice of meeting the academic and behavioral needs of all students through a variety of services containing the following key elements: • High-quality instruction and scientific research-based tiered interventions aligned with individual student need • Frequent monitoring of student progress to make results-based academic and/or behavioral decisions • Application of student response data to important educational decisions (such as those regarding placement, intervention, curriculum, and instructional goals and methodologies)

  3. RtI Team • Core team consists of: • Campus administrator • Counselor • Instructional Specialist • Other ad hoc members: • Special education personnel • ESL/bilingual personnel • Dyslexia personnel • Behavior specialist • Referring teacher

  4. Key Roles of RtI Team • Recordkeeper • Data manager • Timekeeper • Case Manager/facilitator

  5. Core Principles of RtI • We can effectively teach all children • Intervene Early • Use a multi-tier model of service delivery • Use a problem-solving method to make decisions within a multi-tier model • Use research-based, scientifically validated interventions • Monitor student progress • Use data to make decisions

  6. Three Tier Approach • Tier 1: Screening and Core Instructional Interventions • Tier 2: Targeted Group Interventions • Tier 3: Intensive, Individual Interventions

  7. Universal Screener • Produces benchmark data that serve two major functions: • To identify which children need intervention • To identify the student progress • Provides data for the individual student, classroom, school and district

  8. Universal Screener • Is given to everyone • Measures critical skills • Is brief • Can be repeated frequently • Provides graphical data to be shared • Easy to use

  9. RtI Team Non Negotiables • Teams will meet a minimum of once every three weeks • Teams will utilize a structured procedure (which included designated roles for team members) for conducting their meetings • Teams will use standardized documentation forms, as determined by the district RTI team members • District RTI team members will provide targeted training for campus staff members and campus-based RTI team members.

  10. Confidentiality • The legal standards of confidentiality apply to all members and components of the RTI process.

  11. Issues to address • Creating buy-in • Dealing with resistance • Time management • Data collection • Fidelity • Collaborative culture of support • Relevance

  12. Next Steps • Selection of a universal screener • Dates for screening • How it will be administered • What will be the cut off points • What intervention resources will be available • Staff development • Data collection
