  1. Improving Second Grade Reading and Writing Skills at Usher Elementary Technology Program Design by [Your Names Here]

  2. The consensus is that 2nd grade students are not meeting the district goals and need to advance their reading comprehension at a faster pace. The district goal is to prepare students to improve the school's state ranking on next year's 3rd grade standardized test. What can we do as the Technology Committee?

  3. What is the Formal Plan at Usher Elementary? The NCTE Standards are in place forWriting: • Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language (e.g., conventions, style, vocabulary) to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes. • Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g., spelling and punctuation).

  4. Formal Plan, continued • Methods and Instructional Sequence seem to be in place • Professional Development is happening • And yet…

  5. There appear to be holes in the plan!

  6. The Technology Committee Proposes ONE Specific Goal to Strive For… By 2004, each second grade language arts student will be able to write a two paragraph narrative at the proficient level. We propose reaching this goal with 3 objectives:

  7. Objective: Students will develop sentence structure. • Strategies for the Objective: Use a graphic organization program • Benchmarks: Consistent practice of sentence writing skills. • Subject and Predicate • Noun/Verb agreement • Sentence Types (Statement and Question) • Evaluation: Textbook activities • Resources: Graphic Organization program (INSPIRATION 6)

  8. Objective: Students will develop processes of writing. Strategies for the Objective: Develop a Portfolio of various writings. Benchmarks: Proficiency of writing skills 1.Writing a draft and final copy 2. Recognizing basic proofreading skills like spelling and punctuation 3. Writing 3 samples of narrative writing Evaluation: Teacher developed rubric to reflect the state writing standards for second grade. Resources: Portfolios

  9. Objective: Students will publish and share their writings. Strategies for the Objective: Publishing a class newsletter Benchmarks: Writing articles for the class newsletter. 1. Accurate reporting of information (Fact) 2. Writing an opinion article in first person narrative Evaluation: Teacher rubric Resources: Class Newsletter

  10. Some of our concerns are: • Parents don’t believe they have enough input. Usher needs to involve these important stakeholders. • Only 1 technology inservice a semester. More planning and priority for technology would help!

  11. And more concerns… • All 3 second grade teachers had 3 different teaching styles (DI, Writers lab, using the Internet). Collegial sharing needs to happen! • In mentoring program, mentee felt uncomfortable using computers. Mentor modeling technology use needs to happen!

  12. Some Possible Suggestions… • Professional Technology Assessment • Twice a year • Self-assessment • To locate technology experts in population • Communicate technology goals to PTO • Vision/Goals stated in Employee Handbook • Hire subs so teachers can attend professional conferences, meetings, etc. • Lunch and Learn • Support Technology Mentoring Program

  13. Small but important steps to: • COMMUNICATE • SHARE THE SAME GOALS • RE-ASSESS SKILLS • PROCESS NEVER ENDS! TECHNOLOGY IS ALWAYS CHANGING!

  14. This plan may lead us down the same road and the same direction… TO SUCCESS!

  15. THANKS!!!
