What do “push” and “pull” factors mean? • Push: Things that are “pushing” people out of Europe and to America. Examples: Religious tension, overcrowded areas. • Pull: Things that are “pulling” people toward America. Ex: Business opportunities
Why did people want out of Europe? • Europe was very overcrowded; The Americas were vast and unsettled. There was cheap land available so it was easy to settle there. • New Religious groups formed in Europe, creating great conflict and turmoil. People were fined, thrown in jail or even killed over a religious belief.
What is an indentured servant? • An indentured servant is a person with no money that signs a contract to work for several years in exchange for transportation to a colony. • When his term was up, his reward was “freedom dues” which was things like money, tools, or land to start his own farm.
What religious opportunities did the Americas offer? • Many saw the new world as a place to build a better society than Europe. • The Puritans settled in New England and strived to practice a purer, simpler form of Christianity.
What was the Protestant Reformation? • It was a direct assault on the teachings of the Catholic Church. Many religious leaders like Martin Luther began teaching different things. • This led to upset Catholic leaders and Political leaders.
