The Lost Colony • The first English Colony of Roanoke, originally consisting of 100 householders, was founded in 1585, 22 years before Jamestown and 37 years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, under the ultimate authority of Sir Walter Raleigh. • In 1584 Raleigh had been granted a patent by Queen Elizabeth I to colonize America. Interestingly, when Drake picked up these colonists, he left behind 15 of his own men, who were never heard from again. • This foreshadowed one of the great mysteries of North America, Roanoke's so-called "Lost Colony" of 90 men, 17 women and 9 children, founded in 1587 and discovered to be missing in 1590. Although both the English and the Spanish searched for clues to the colony's disappearance for many years, the mystery has never been solved.   

4. Eleanor and Virginia Dare a member of the Roanoke Colony and the daughter of John White, the colony's governor. While little is known about her life, more is known about her than most of the sixteen other women who left England in 1587 as part of the Roanoke expedition. She married Ananias Dare, a London tiler and bricklayer. 6. Theories Anthropologists have Five Popular Theories: First, the people of Roanoke simply left the settlement. Second, the whole population of Roanoke Island was killed by a disease . Third, the village was destroyed by a severe storm. Fourth, the people of Roanoke decided to leave Roanoke Island to live with the Natives. 7. Theory 1 • The people simple left the settlement . This is one of the more probable theories.  It is said that they have supposedly left Roanoke island and started settling in the Chesapeake Bay.  • And that they built rafts or a boat of some sort using materials torn apart from their houses.  • Close to twenty years had passed before John Smith and his group started the well-known settlement of Jamestown (where the popular story of Pocahontas takes place). http://www.theshadowlands.net/roanoke.htm

Theory 2 • The whole population of Roanoke was killed by a disease .This is an absurd theory.  It is true that the English had brought over some diseases.  However, note, there were no bodies found and the houses had disappeared.  Quite a ridiculous theory.  . http://www.theshadowlands.net/roanoke.htm

9. Theory 3 • The village was destroyed by a severe storm. Another one of the incredulous theories.  A hurricane could have washed away the colonists and destroyed the houses, true.  But the huge problem with this theory is the fence was still standing.  It is not possible for a storm to do as much damage as clearing away the whole settlement when the fence is untouched.   http://www.theshadowlands.net/roanoke.htm

10. Theory 4 • The people of Roanoke decided to leave Roanoke Island to live with the Natives. This theory is definitely probable.  Crotoan, which was carved on the post, was the name of an island in the area.  It was also the name of the group of the kind natives that inhabited it.  It is possible that they colonists decided to live with the natives of Croatoan.  Though there has not been a decent amount of evidence to prove this theory, there also has been no evidence against it.  . http://www.theshadowlands.net/roanoke.htm

11. Theory 5 • The colonists were killed by the Native Americans . This is the most probable of all five theories.  One important fact supports this theory.  As one may not know, the English men had before tried to start the colony of Roanoke before.  • There was a group of fifteen men.  A little over a year had passed since they first started the colony, before explorers decided to check up on their hopeful progress.  What these explorers found was one dead body.  • It was verified that it was the work of the Natives.  From this past event we know that the Natives were capable of such atrocities and also capable of hiding the bodies.  What’s interesting is that the Natives pulled all of that off in between less than a two year period.  • While the “lost colony” had been deprived of its leader for a number of three years.  The “Indians” had a sufficient amount of time to tear down the buildings too.  However there has still not been enough evidence to verify this theory. . • http://www.theshadowlands.net/roanoke.htm

Is there any way that DNA technology could be used to prove your theory that some of the colonists lived on? • Scientist have theories that the colonists of Roanoke actually started a war with the Native Americans. The Native Americans were known to take the bodies with them and they were known to cause destruction to houses. Scientists believe this is the mostprobable theory.

13. If I were an anthropologist charged with proving this theory...... • If I were an anthropologist charged with proving this proving this theory I would explain the Pros and Cons of the situation. Then I would let the others decide whether it was possible to them or not.

16. If I were John White….. • If I were John White trying to convince the others to stay and look for the colonists I would start off as “ But what will happen to them? What if they don’t make ? What about you wife, friends, children, and enemies? Do you want to see them gone forever? What do you think , will you still want them gone I would not.” • If they still say no a hurricane is coming, I will say “ What about the Indians, can’t we ask them anything like, Have you seen any one like us?.”If They still say no Then it is a lost cause.

18. Clues they found • The only clues that they found was the word CRO on a tree, and C-R-O-A-T-O-A-N on a fence post.

19. Did they find any colonists? • The men found no people but only the letters "CRO" carved on a tree and on another part of the island they found the word "Croatoan" carved on a wooden fence post. These carvings were the only clues they could find. • White wanted to look for the lost people because he didn't see any signs of their deaths. He wanted to look for his family but fall was quickly coming. • They knew it was the hurricane season and they could see a storm coming. 20. Who is John White? • an English artist, and one of several early English colonists who sailed with Richard Grenville in 1585 to North Carolina. During his time at Roanoke Island, he made numerous famous drawings with watercolour of the surrounding landscape and native peoples. These works are significant as they are the most informative illustrations of a Native American society of the Eastern seaboard, and predate the first body of "discovery voyage art" created in the late eighteenth century by the artists who sailed with Captain James Cook. 24. Who is Sir Francis Drake? • Sir Francis Drake was an Englishsea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, a renowned pirate, and politician of the Elizabethan era. Elizabeth I of England awarded Drake a knighthood in 1581. Sir Walter Raleigh had received a charter • . The charter specified that Raleigh had ten years in which to establish a settlement in North America North America • North America is the northern continent of the Americas, situated in the Earth's northern hemisphere and in the western hemisphere... •  or lose his right to colonization. Raleigh and Elizabeth intended that the venture should provide riches from the New World

Who is Sir Francis Drake(continued) • A charter is the grant of authority or rights, stating that the granter formally recognizes the prerogative of the recipient to exercise the rights specified for the colonization of the area of North America known as Virginia. • The Queen asked him to go to the New World so he could get goods for England from the New World. And he wanted a new life for his family.

26. Why did the colonists stay in Roanoke? • Several groups attempted to establish a colony, but either abandoned the settlement or died. The final group of colonists disappeared after three years elapsed without supplies from England during the Anglo-Spanish War. They are known as "The Lost Colony" and their fate is still unknown.

Croatoan People • is the name used by 1585-1587 Roanoke Colony settlers for Hatteras Island or an island near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA. • It is speculated that the Roanoke colonists might have fled there. • Reasons given for this include the colonists' friendship with Manteo, a native of Croatoan Island, and a carving of the word "C-R-O-A-T-O-A-N" into a post of the fort (and "C-R-O" into a nearby tree), ostensibly(To all outward appearances) to let John White know where they had fled when he returned in 1590.

28. Croatoan People(continued) • Native Americans, found at the time of European contact, ceased to exist as an identifiable, political group about 1690. In 1701, John Lawson visited the famous Croatan Indians (by this time they were called Hatteras Indians). He noted light hair and blue eyes and their affection for the English, stating they had ancestors whom "could talk in the book". There is a possibility that the Croatoansdi mix blood with the lost colonists. This is just a theory. • The last recorded mention of these Coastal Indians was in 1729 by the Surveyor General of North Carolina, Edward Mosley. "There are no Indians living on the coast but seven or eight Hatteras Indians living at Indian Town, with the English".

29. Is anything known about the colonists of Roanoke? • There has been some controversy over some stones which appeared to have a connection to the lost colony; August 18th, marks the 420th birthday of Virginia Dare. I can't let this day go by without noting that fact. • We know very little about Virginia Dare.Nobody knows what Virginia looked like, nor do we know anything about her, except that she, along with her colonist parents, Ananias Dare and his wife, Eleanor, and 110 other colonists, vanished. • Virginia Dare is a symbol of the English roots of this country. And now at a time when the future of our country is very much in doubt, Virginia Dare, and the legendary Lost Colony of which she and her parents were a part, are iconic symbols.

31. My Theory • I think the colonists moved to Croatoan Island but John White would not have known because he never searched for them . I think that they had a war and some lived. They moved to Croatoan Island and lived on. There has been a discovery that the Croatoans did find the colonists ,but there has not been fully examained. • The world may never know what happened to the colonists of Roanoke Island but there have been many theories.
