  3. Studied physics in Cavendish Laboratory during 1885 • Developed view that gamma rays and X-rays have particle-like properties (1907) • Cavendish Professor of Physics at Leeds 1909-1915,

  4. Quain Professor of Physics University College London, 1915-1925 • Fullerian Professor of Chemistry in Royal Institution (1935-1940)

  5. found branch of science, analysis of crystal structure by X-rays • Detected underwater sounds to locate submarines during WWI due to work and scientific eminence

  6. President of physics at Australian Association for Advancement of Science • Professor of mathematics and physics at University Adelaide • Awarded Nobel Prize 1915 jointly with his son

  7. Made C.B.E. in 1917 and knighted in 1920 • Order of Merit in 1913 • Elected President of the Royal Society in 1935 • Was honorary doctor of sixteen universities

  8. Trained himself to become good, lucid lecturer • Popular scientific lecturer and writer • Made instrument equipment needed for practical laboratory teaching
