Objectives and Constraints • Prove the feasibility of smart materials in ornithoptic flight in cruise conditions • Use only solid state smart materials • Use a one piece wing surface c1 w2 Θ1 w1
Group Structure MAE 435 April 3, 2014 Status Update Presentation
Aerodynamics – Wing Designs MAE 435 April 3, 2014 Status Update Presentation
FEA Complex Wing Design Testing various thicknesses in different locations of the wing • Different load cases examined: • Distributed load over the surface area • Distributed load along the edge • Pointed load at the end • Natural Frequency MAE 435 April 3, 2014 Status Update Presentation
Structures - Fuselage Prototype • Capable of a 6.5lbf payload • Light weight design~ 38g • Does not need aerodynamic design • 1st iteration is designed with poster board. • Final design will be carbon fiber reinforced
Structures – Four Bar Linkage MAE 435 April 3, 2014 Status Update Presentation
Macro Fiber Composite Testing LabView Program for Static and Dynamic MFC Testing
Controls/Electronics • The Arduino UNO was used for prototyping, and the Zduino LEE is being fitted and prepared for the fuselage. • Bimorph signal generation, with fault safety, and frequency display.
Future Work • Construct a wired controller • Perform MFC test with Arduino controller • Install Zduino LEE in fuselage
