  2. Overview • The circulatory System is the body system that pumps blood throughout your entire body. • It keeps you alive by giving oxygen to all the individual parts of your body.

  3. The Heart • The heart is the “main organ” of circulatory system. • It is the organ that actually PUMPS the blood throughout the body. • It is made up of 4 separate chambers, 2 atriums, and 2 ventricles.

  4. The Heart (Continued..) • Blood comes into the heart through the superior Vena Cava (vein). • The heart then puts it through it’s four chambers, then out through the Aorta (artery) to the Lungs, to be oxygenated.

  5. The Heart (Picture) • To the right is a labeled picture of the heart.

  6. Arteries • Arteries are the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood to every single part of the body. • The biggest arteries are called arteries, then arterioles, and then finally capillaries. • Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the body.

  7. Veins • Veins are what takes the blood back to the heart after it has been deoxygenated, by giving it’s oxygen to the part of your body. • They progress from Vein (biggest), venule, the capillary (smallest).

  8. The circulatory system (Picture) • To the right is a diagram of the circulatory system.

  9. Heart Disease • Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the United States. • Most of the time when you think of heart disease, you think of a heart attack, a heart disease that kills many people every year.

  10. Heart Attack • The main cause of a heart attack is Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). • It occurs when plaque builds up in your arteries over a long period of time and reduces blood flow into the heart.

  11. Heart Attack Prevention • There are some ways to prevent a heart attack. Some are listed Below: • Eat a healthy diet. • Get a lot of exercise. • Don’t smoke.
