  1. Cardiac Tissue Matrix Katelyn Pate

  2. Statistics Heart disease and stroke are the 1st and 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S. They account for 40% of all deaths, more than all cancer combined Congenital heart defects occur in nearly 14 of every 1000 newborn children Most common congenital defect and leading cause of death in first year of life

  3. Why is this Important? • Cardiac tissue has very low regenerative capabilities • Tissue engineering can be used to: • Reconstruct malformed hearts in children • Regenerate failing hearts in adults

  4. Background • 3 Approaches • Administration of liquid-phase cell suspensions • Hydrogel cell delivery via catheters • Contractile cardiac tissue engineered patch

  5. Injection of Cell Suspensions Advantages Disadvantages Very convenient Low engraftment and cell survival

  6. Hydrogel Cell Delivery Advantages Disadvantages Improved cell retention over injection via a syringe Offers customization using growth factors Still low engraftment and cell survival

  7. Cardiac Tissue Engineered Patch Advantages Disadvantages Deliver cells with immediate function and capacity for vascular and electromechanical integration with the heart Difficult to create a scaffold that displays functional and morphological properties of native heart muscles
