  1. The MAIN Causes of War • Militarism • Alliance System • Imperialism • Nationalism • Spark that started the war was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria by Gavrilo Princip of the “Black Hand

  2. Militarism • Nations spend large amounts of money to build massive militaries. • If you spend that much, you will most likely want to use the military!! • Germany was competing with the UK to build battleships.

  3. All the countries of Europe built up their armies and navies.   In 1914, their armed forces stood like this:•   Germany: 2,200,000 soldiers, 97 warships•   Austria-Hungary: 810,000 soldiers, 28 warships.•   Italy: 750,000 soldiers, 36 warships•   France: 1,125,000 soldiers, 62 warships•   Russia: 1,200,000 soldiers, 30 warships•   Great Britain: 711,000 soldiers, 185 warshipsAs one country increased its armies, so all the others felt obliged to increase their armed forces to keep the ‘balance of power’.

  4. The Alliance System • By 1914 all the major powers were linked by a system of alliances. • The alliances made it more likely that a war would start. • Once started, the alliances made it more likely to spread. http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWschlieffenP.htm

  5. Imperialism • All the great powers were competing for colonies / territory. • The British feared Germany in Africa. • The Austrians feared Serbia / Russia in the Balkans • This competition always led to the threat of war.

  6. Nationalism • This was an age when all nations wanted to assert their power and independence. (Too Much Pride) • Pride leads to hatred between nations. (i.e. – intense hatred btw Germany and France) • In Europe, Slavs, aided by Serbia and Russia, wanted to be free of Austrian rule.

  7. Significant Individuals • Kaiser Wilhelm II – leader of Germany (very aggressive) • Emperor Franz Joseph – long-time leader of Aus-Hun • Tsar Nicholas II – reluctant leader of Russia • H.H. Asquith – prime minister of Britain • George V – king of Britain • Gaston Doumergue – prime minister of France • Woodrow Wilson – President of the USA
