Zimbabwe's first Traditional and Organic Food Festival Saturday 7 December at the Botanic Gardens in Harare from 9am to 4pm ($1 entrance)
AIM To celebrate and publicise the diversity of healthy and sustainably produced food in Zimbabwe
Activities About 40 stalls of food (to taste and for sale), seed/seedlings, snacks and lunches run by farmer groups, NGOs, UN-orgs (FAO, UNICEF, WHO, WFP), organic/local food businesses, Ministries, Diabetes Association, other African foods (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nigeria) Talks on food Cooking demonstrations Full day's programme for children, related to food Live entertainment (music, dance) during lunch
Why the Festival? • Zimbabwean diet going downhill - narrow and more processed junk foods • Many problems of malnutrition across the economic spectrum • Unsustainable production methods, lack of ecological perspective • Have a diversity of nutritious traditional foods • Need to link farmers and consumers more
Collaborative spirit and not a one-off • Many organisations have come together to organise this: ZOPPA, PELUM-Zimbabwe, ZAVSAP, FoodMattersZimbabwe, ZIMSOFF, BIZ, CADS, STEP, Ministry of Health, UZ Nutrition department (students); has blessing of Food and Nutrition Council and ZTA • Will be meeting next year to plan further events, not only in Harare. • Contact: caroline@bio-innovation.org
