  2. THE 54TH MASSACHUSETTS regiment • 1ST black regiment recruited by the North. • Led by colonial Robert Shaw. • First fight with the Confederates(South) was on July 16th where attack was held back on James Island.

Battle of Fort Wagner • Union General Quincy Gilmore led the battle of Fort Wagner after a week of positioning 41 cannons. • The battle lasted more than 7 hours and the North lost when the 54th regiment’s leader Robert Shaw died of a heart shot. After that, 272 black men of the regiment died. • Then, after Gilmore planned for 6 weeks, the union and its well placed trenches forced the Confederates to leave Fort Wagner on September 6th. Now the Union had Fort Wagner.

  8. Irony of the war • During the war, the North and South didn’t think about how the blacks were fighting for themselves in the North with the 54th Massachusetts regiment. The Civil War was mainly started due to slavery of Africans in the South and yet the Africans were used to help stop a fight over themselves by the North. • Cool Fact: Black soldiers were paid $10 per month, about $3 less than white soldiers!
