  2. Five Research Questions When was the 54th Massachusetts regiment started? Who was in charge of the regiment? Why was the regiment created? To do what? How did the 54th Massachusetts regiment do in battles? What happened to the regiment?

  3. When was the 54th Massachusetts regiment started? The regiment was established about half through the civil war in March of 1863. It was made of all black soldiers who were former slaves.

  4. Who was in charge of the regiment? When the Union made the regiment they put Col. Robert Shaw in charge of it. He was a young and inexperienced officer who probably wasn’t the best man for the job.

  5. Why was the regiment created? To do what? The regiment was created to help the Union army win the civil war. Which would free all the former slaves.

  6. How did the 54th Massachusetts regiment do in battles? The regiment only fought in small battles at first. But by the end of the war the regiment got to lead the way in the battle of Fort. Wagner. The regiment didn’t do very well in the battle of Fort Wagner about half of there troops died.

  7. What happened to the regiment? Half of the regiment died. For the other half they were freedmen and for the first time ever they were allowed to do what ever they wanted.
