Glory the movie • Glory is the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment • It is the story of the first black regiment to be organized in a northern state. • It became famous due to a heroic, but tragic attach on Ft. Wagner, S. Carolina on July 18, 1863
Colonel • Chosen to organize and lead the regiment was Col. Robert G. Shaw • He was the son of well-known Boston abolitionists. • An abolitionist was a person that favored doing away with slavery. • Many felt that Shaw received the appointment just because of who his parents were.
Frederick Douglass • Helping to recruit the Black volunteers was a former slave turned abolitionists. • Douglass had been a slave but managed to escape. • He spent his life trying to abolish slavery. • Two of his own sons served in the 54th.
Stats • During the Civil War (1861-1865) more than 186,000, Black Americans fought for the Union either as soldiers or sailors. A full regiment during the Civil War was usually 1000 men. During its existence the 54th had 1100 soldiers serve. • More than 40,000 of that number died. • 16 of them received the Medal of Honor for their bravery above and beyond the call of duty. It is the highest honor the U.S. gives a soldier. • Sgt William H. Carney was the first black to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
Contraband • Anything useful to the enemy is known as contraband and can be legally seized by soldiers. • To get around the Fugitive Slave Law that made it illegal to help a slave escape, runaway or captured slaves were considered contraband by the Union troops.
Edward Pierce • Pierce was a Union soldier. • During the war he was commissioned to examine the condition of the “negroes” fighting and report back to the government. • His reports had great impact on how the black soldiers were seen. • In addition to his reports, he sent articles to newspapers, esp. the Harper’s Weekly.
Irish Americans • Irish Americans were some of the newest immigrants to America. • They had a hard time finding work and getting respect. Most were very poor. • Many had to serve in the civil war. • They did not like the blacks because: …they feared freed blacks would take their jobs … felt the Civil War was the blacks fault
