Nigeria • Health care: • Historically terrible access to health care • 1987 Bamako Initiative – promotes community-based centers • MD shortage due to emigration to North America & Europe • 21,000 Nigerian MDs in US • System: • Government run, but private industry (fee for service) exists • Federal government – runs university teaching hospitals • State – general hospitals • Local – pharmacies • But access in rural areas severely limited…
