Laboratory Activity Scientific Drawing
This is not an art class… • But you can learn to make a scientific drawing by learning two things. • Look for proportion and relationship.
With your eyes and a ruler look for relationships • Where is the dorsal fin in relation to the pectoral fin? • Where does the lateral line begin and end? • Where does the dorsal fin end in relation to the anal fin?
Look for proportion. • How big is the eye in proportion to the head? • How far back does the pectoral fin go along the side of the body? • What is the ratio of the width of the body to its overall length?
What do I draw first? • Draw the overall shape first, • Then you add detail. Remember, draw with a light touch so that you can erase easily.
Remember • The imaginary border • Portrait format • Drawing is centered & balanced • Use a light touch so if you must erase it won’t look messy
Set up your lab paper with this information • Title: Scientific Drawing Lab • Name • Date / Hour • You are to make a drawing and list 10 quantitative and 10 qualitative observations
SCIENTIFIC DRAWING • Need a sharp pencil, a ruler and a good eraser • Diagram should be at least 1/2 page in size, leave space to add labels • Use a ruler to draw lines to the different structures. Make sure none of your label lines cross. • Draw only what you see and keep your drawing simple. • Shading or coloring is not usually found on scientific drawings. • Label the different structures carefully. • Give your drawing a title. You can also include the scale of your drawing. • EX: Is the drawing of your specimen twice as big as the real specimen? Or is it the actual size of the specimen -- the person looking at your diagram needs to know.
