  1. WarmUp 8/25/09 • Define quantitative observations? • List 3 examples. • Define qualitative observations? List 3 examples. • 3. List 3 qualitative and quantitative observations of the penguin on my desk. Title a page in your notebook for WarmUps Place the date in the left margin Each day copy the WarmUp. Write complete answers below.

  2. Laboratory Activity Scientific Drawing

  3. This is not an art class… • But you can learn to make a scientific drawing by learning two things. • Look for proportion and relationship.

  4. With your eyes and a ruler look for relationships • Where is the dorsal fin in relation to the pectoral fin? • Where does the lateral line begin and end? • Where does the dorsal fin end in relation to the anal fin?

  5. Look for proportion. • How big is the eye in proportion to the head? • How far back does the pectoral fin go along the side of the body? • What is the ratio of the width of the body to its overall length?

  6. What do I draw first? • Draw the overall shape first, • Then you add detail. Remember, draw with a light touch so that you can erase easily.

  7. Remember • The imaginary border • Portrait format • Drawing is centered & balanced • Use a light touch so if you must erase it won’t look messy

  8. Set up your lab paper with this information • Title: Scientific Drawing Lab • Name • Date / Hour • You are to make a drawing and list 10 quantitative and 10 qualitative observations

  9. SCIENTIFIC DRAWING • Need a sharp pencil, a ruler and a good eraser • Diagram should be at least 1/2 page in size, leave space to add labels • Use a ruler to draw lines to the different structures. Make sure none of your label lines cross. • Draw only what you see and keep your drawing simple. • Shading or coloring is not usually found on scientific drawings. • Label the different structures carefully. • Give your drawing a title. You can also include the scale of your drawing. • EX: Is the drawing of your specimen twice as big as the real specimen? Or is it the actual size of the specimen -- the person looking at your diagram needs to know.
