TURKISH FORUM AND ITS POLICY • Turkish Forum is a non-profit grassroots organization, • Turkish Forum formed during June 1993 by the Turks living in USA and Americans of Turkish Decent and Friends of Turkey. Turkish Forum began an organized and completely volunteer work ,to Preserve Turkish Culture and to protect Turkish American values.. • Turkish Forum has 300.000+ members across the globe • Later Turkish Forum realized Political and Cultural organization should be complemented by Economic relations to improve its penetration to American fabric.

KIZILDERİLİLER TÜRK MÜ? • 2-4 Temmuz 1999 tarihleri arasında Denizli'de yapılan "Yedinci Türk Dünyası Dostluk Kardeşlik ve İşbirliği Kurultayı"na katılan Onayda Kızılderili kabilesi reisi ve Amerika Yerlileri Sosyal İşler Daire Başkanı M. Franklin Keel konuşmasında: Kızılderililer hakkında geniş bilgi veren Keel, Kızılderililerin (atalarının) Baykal Gölü ve Yenisey-Tuva bölgelerinden Amerika kıtasına, Alaska üzerinden göç ettiklerini ifade etti. Kızılderililer ile Türklerin DNA testlerinin ayni olduğunu ve ayrıca"Y" kromozomunun sadece yeryüzünde Türkler ile Kızılderililerde bulunduğunu söyledi. Kızılderililerin konuştukları dillerdeki kelime benzerlikleri gibi, halı, kilim ve el işlerindeki desenlerin ayni olduğunu, örf, adet ve geleneklerde de çok büyük benzerlik olduğunu ifade etti.. • M. Franklin Keel konuşmada:"DNA testlerinde Kızılderililerin Türk asilli olduklarının anlaşıldığını, ben Türk kurultayına katılarak ve Türkiye'de bulunmak suretiyle daha iyi hissettim. Navajo and Apache DNA Matched those of Tuvans • Russian geneticist claims THE PRECISE ORIGIN OF NATIVE AMERICANS, based on his genetic studies of the TUVAN TURKISH PEOPLE IN SIBERIA. • Ilya Zakharov, deputy director of Moscow's Vavlov Institute Of General Genetics, says samples taken from about 430 Tuvans. DNA data was analyzed and then compared with that of Eskimos and Amerindian people, including the Navajo and Apache.AMERINDIAN DNA MAKEUP EXACTLY MATCHED THE TUVANS • According to 2003 United States Census Bureau estimates, a little over one third of the 2,786,652 Native Americans in the United States live in three states: California at 413,382, Arizona at 294,137 and Oklahoma at 279,559 • The largest tribes in the U.S. by population were Navajo, Cherokee, Choctaw, Sioux, Chippewa, Apache, Blackfeet, Iroquois, and Pueblo ..There are 562 federally recognized tribal governments in the United States

AMERİKAN TARİHİNDE TÜRKLER • 1585-1586 suresince Sir Francis Drake, Amerika’daki Ispanyol yörelerine yaptıgı baskınlarda, yüzlerce Türkü özgürlügüne kavuşturarak kan borcunu ödedi.Bunlara sonradan Meluncan (Melungeon) denildi (çik). • 1635 gibi erken tarihlerde bile Türkler grup grup isçi olarak Amerika’daki Ingiliz sömürgelerine getirilmistir. • South Carolina’da Sumter Ilçesi “Türkleri” 1780 civarında Kuzey Afrikadan Amerikaya gelenlerdir. • Amerika’daki iç Savaş sırasında “Melungeon Marauders” adıyla bilinen ceteyi kurarak, güney’i desteklediler, bu hareketleri savaştan sonra kendilerine karşı daha büyük ayrim gösterilmesine sebep oldu.(Removed from their land -Trail of Tears-) Bu ayrım 20nci yüzyıla kadar devam etti • 200 milliondan fazla Kızılderili (Tüm Amerika Kitasinda) hayatlarını kayıp etti, Colombusdan sonra.   8. Trail of Tears • First Cherokees in North. Georgia and South Carolina were forcibly relocated. 25% of the relocated people died during the 116-day forced journey to Oklahoma, over a distance of 1000 km. This was the so-called Trail of Tears, Several Indian removals took place from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Mississippi in the 1830s.; Rev. Walter N. Wyeth(Wyeth 1896: 168). .Andrew Jackson. By 1890, the American Indians had been reduced by 98% and The United States government had seized 98 percent of their land(J. Ryan)

  9. OTTOMAN CONNECTION • Records of North Carolina Land Patents and Grants show that as early as 1635 Turks were brought to the colonies as workers and laborers. Thus, the trade that developed between the Americas and Europe, Europe and North Africa, and North Africa and the Middle East provided a link that on an individual scale permitted an intermingling of peoples.

THE NEW YORK ZOUAVES • Those gay and gallant Soldiers of the Crimea • On February 8, 1864, the regiment was redesignated the 33rd United States and Combined with two other regiments (one white and one black) the 33rd made their first assault on a fortification at Battery Gregg on James Island, in Charleston. The combined forces began their attack on July 2nd, 1864 and captured the fort that day. In December, 1864, the 33rd participated with the 55th Massachusetts at the Battle of Honey Hill. • The final year of their service, on February 9, 1866

  15. TÜRKİYE’YE (GERİ) DÖNÜŞ • 13 Kasim 1918’de, İttifak Kuvvetleri’nin Istanbul’u ve Akdeniz’deki diger Türk limanlarını işgal etmesi Amerikan Türk toplumunu şok etti….. Birlesik Devletler’deki Türklerin yarısı butun eşyalarini toplayip ve biriktirdikleri parayla birlikte istilaci yabancı kuvvetlere karşışavaşmak icin Türkiye’ye geri döndüler. • Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Birinci Cumhurbaşkanı Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Türk gemilerini Amerika’ya göndererek anavatana geri dönmek isteyen her Türk’e bedava yolculuk teklif etti. 1899’dan 1924’e kadar Birleşik Devletler’e gelen Türklerin yaklaşık yüzde 86’si Türkiye’ye geri gitti(Source TBMM kayıtları)

  19. AMERİKADA KAÇ TÜRK VAR-2 • 1820 den bügüne kadar toplam 495,553 Türk göçmen ABD’ye geldi. Şu anda 117,575 Türk göçmen veya Türk asıllı kişiler ABD’de yaşıyor. (Bilgiler U.S. Çensus Bureau) • New York’ta 23,674, Kaliforniya’da 15,104, New Jersey’de 12,396, Florida’da 9,615 Texas’ta 4,711 kişi yaşıyor(U.S. Çensus Bureau) • Ancak gayri resmi rakamlar öyle çeşitli ki, herkes gönlüne göre konuşuyor.

  21. Tahsil - Gelir Seviyesi - Lobi • Kaliforniya eyaletinde, Kaliforniyalılar yılda ortalama sadece $53,025 kazanırlarken, Türk göçmenler yılda ortalama $68,232 kazanıyorlarmış. (Ertan Elmaağaçlı - Turkish Journal ) • Kaliforniya eyaletinde, Kaliforniya’da oturan kesimin sadece %26,62’sinin üniversite diplomaları varken, Türk göçmenlerin %53,5’in en azından üniversite diplomaları varmış. (Ertan Elmaağaçlı ) • Butun Eyaletlerde Lobi faaliyetlerimiz için çok büyük bir artı olabilecek, Bir belediye başkanından ya da bir Kongre üyesinden destek isterken bizim şu kadar nüfusumuz var, bu kadar oy kapasitemiz var demek çok güç.

TA Closely monitor US foreign policy for the mutual interest of Turkey and US. - Voting members of the Turkish communities are small - Lack of institutions devoted to TA relations * Think Tanks (“Local”, State or “Central”, Federal *Academic Centers . TA lobby is not very influential “Alone”, -TA communities are emerging, learning and developing rapid responsetechniques * TA are begin to unite with a strong voice * Need to form more alliances . New generation “New Born” of TA’s are coming up * Students, Teachers, Businessman, Lawyers, Politicians ++ . Great deal of work and education needed * To develop well informed TAlobby,* Long term strategy development and* Strong Grassroots level (Non-social level) organizations

  24. 2000 SONRASI - SORUNLAR Amerikadaki Turklerin sorunlarını tesbit etmek amacı ile 2005 Mayıs Ayında yapılan Ankete katılanları • %25 i en büyük sorunlarının yanlızlık ve arkadaş bulamamak oldugunu, • %14 u istedigi işi bulamamak oldugunu, • %13 u memleket özlemi oldugunu, %12 si ingilizce yetersizligi oldugunu, • %10 u çok çalışmak oldugunu, • %10 u Türklerin Gruplaşması oldugunu belirtmişdir

TURKISH AMERICAN SOCIETYAND TURKISH AMERICANS TODAY • History of Shared Interests of Turkey and US * Turkey has been a NATO ally since 1952 (Second largest military power) * Maintained 24 American Military Base During Cold War and Now * An US key ally in Gulf war 1991* Participated missions in Korea, Somalia, Kosova, Afganistan * Safe Home and passage for US Army During during 1993 Iraq Problem. * Working with US To rebuild Iraq & Afganistan (+++++++) • Difficulties and Problems of Turkish American society * Not yet well represented in American Fabric * Since Sept-11 domestic uncertainties in Turkey have also made it difficult for the todays weak yet emerging strong Turkish-American Lobby to formulate long term Strategy and maintain consistent position • Desire and Goal / Purpose of Turkish Americans * An active lobby will be instrumental in strengthening cooperation between the two allies during this critical period when a lack of security ignating around Turkey’s south/southeast borders. +...+

  26. NEXT STEPS FOR TURKISH AMERICANS • Increase the attention and support to the activities New Generation of Turks born in USA. Encourage them to function in political arena. • Preserve the Fabric of Turkish Culture and improve its cultural values integration to American society with all its plusses. • IMPROVE RELATIONS WITH EARLIER SETTLERS (AMERICAN INDIANS, MELUNGEONS , DESCENDANTS OF EARLY 20TH CENTURY IMMIGRANTS ) AND FORM ALLIANCES ON CULTURAL, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL ARENA. • Improve relations with Other races and their societies settled in USA , Define common cultural values and historical relations, Form Alliances on cultural arena. • Improve relations of Turkish and American companies doing business in Turkey and USA, and form relations on the basis of free trade and win win agreements. • CONTINUE TO SUPPORT TURKISH AMERICAN RELATIONS ON COMMON FOREIGN POLICY ARENA
