ELTON CREEK, DS OF FREEDOM 7 BRIDGE, FREEDOM, NY.

This project aims to address bank erosion along Elton Creek in Freedom, NY, through the implementation of live siltation, living dikes, and vegetation planting. The goal is to stabilize the stream banks, improve water quality, and enhance aquatic habitat.

ELTON CREEK, DS OF FREEDOM 7 BRIDGE, FREEDOM, NY. • Bank erosion is threatening a farm road • NRCS –Environmental Quality Incentives Program {EQIP} cost share with landowner • Rural (farmland) • Bed material: gravel-cobble-sand, incised • Pool-riffle-pool regime, slope around 1% • Average width 20-30 ft, 10-14 ft tall banks • Partially spring fed. • High-quality trout stream, not stocked, natural reproduction of Rainbow, Brown, & upstream, Brook Trout

  3. LIVE SILTATION{Willow branches about 1-2 inches in diameter, 6 to 8 ft long, 2/3 in ground, 1/3 out, intermixed with Silky & Red osier Dogwood that is 4 to 6 ft long}

  10. TRANSPLANTING A LARGE CLUMP OF WILLOW TO USE AS A LIVING DIKE Multi-stem (20 to 40 stems) bushes approx. 14 to 24 ft tall, transplanted as a single clump, with roots in trench directly behind the LPSTP. Tops of branches were trimmed & used as Live Poles (6 to 10 ft long).
