Industry Training • 190,000 people in formal industry- related ed & training each year • 35,000 enterprises • 37 industry-established and owned ITOs • co-funding model (in cash and in kind) • drives individual, firm and industry productivity • ITOs have ‘coverage’ of 78% of the New Zealand workforce

  3. Maori in Industry Training • 16% of industry trainees are Maori • Maori are over-represented in Seafood, Social Services, Forestry, Food Manufacturing • Maori achievement highlighted in TES • Industry training critical to Maori economic development

  4. Background • Ako Aotearoa – National Fund Project Build success for Maori learners within the tertiary sector • Collaborative project – MITO, BCITO, ETITO, ITF • Kahui Tautako Consulting – specialising in Maori research • Project Advisory Group • Project commenced in Jan 2011

Project Objectives • An integrated approach for traditional trades • Distinctive characteristics of traditional trades • how Maori workers learn in the workplace • what works • barriers to success • Strengthening industry training models and career pathways • Improving sector knowledge for traditional trades

  6. Research Project • Kaupapa Maori Research • Focus on talking ‘with’ not ‘about’ Maori learners • Builds on existing work and evidence base • Mixed methods approach • Research timeframe

  7. Outcomes • Inform work of ITOs involved with workplaces • Benefit to other ITOs • Inform wider policy development
