Giving a New Face to Instructional Time Tiger Time
Why we started Tiger Time • Wanted to get students more academic help • Wanted to increase attendance • Wanted to decrease discipline
Whitwell High School Race to the Top New Schedule Tiger Time is born: Based on the results from visits to three successful high schools, the Leadership Committee designed a new schedule which would give the students time to receive counseling, remediation, and/or tutoring as needed. After-school time is difficult for many of our students so the new schedule was built with a 30 minute intervention time, known as “Tiger Time.”
1. North Greene High – 75% decrease in late and missing work 2. Fulton High – dramatic increases in graduation rate and dramatic decreases in discipline issues 3. Cherokee High – fewer absences and a more unified student body Results Seen at Schools Visited

The Plan • Implement a new schedule. • Advisory groups 3 times per week. • Intervention time 2 times per week. • Goal – Foster a relationship between a faculty member and the group of students assigned to them.
WHAT IS THE CURRENT SCHEDULE FOR YOUR SCHOOL? WHAT COULD BE THE NEW ONE?
Suzanne Smith Whitwell HS School Counselor
Advisory Groups • Three times per week • School Counselor is responsible for gathering activities and dispersing information • Changes in activities will be made to reflect the needs and issues of the student body • Faculty members offer help and advice with social and academic issues

Tiger Time Teacher Responsibilities Tuesday and Thursday Monday, Wednesday, Friday Independent teachers will: Report to their assigned stations Monitor students’ behavior Provide and initiate games, homework help, etc. within the designated free time area Intervention teachers will: Provide tutoring and/or testing materials as necessary Take attendance and report missing students to the office Each teacher will: • Be responsible for their individual advisor group (attendance, discipline) • Assign and grade literacy and writing activities as posted • Meet with students individually during counseling time • Report to counselor and/or other administrators any concerns about students
Tiger TimeStudent Responsibilities Report to advisor groups on time. • Participate in all advisor group activities. • Maintain proper behavior in the rooms • and hallways. • Report to intervention when assigned. • Remain in designated areas during independent time.
Administrator Duties During Tiger Time Principal - Monitor any problems Asst. Principal - Call students in as needed/check for attendance School Counselor - Walk through classrooms/assign new students an advisor
So what were our results? • After only ½ year of Tiger Time our discipline fell by 20%. • Our AYP scores in math and science increased. • 85% of students getting intervention either by recommendation or volunteer
Dedicating ½ hour to each student sends a strong message that this school system cares about the individual. (A small investment for such a big payoff.)
