(Some) Dive Sites of Utah USU Scuba Club Note: Information in this presentation may be wrong. You assume all risk when diving these sites yourself
Popular Utah Dive Sites • Camperworld • Bear Lake • Homestead Crater • Bonneville Seabase • Blue Lake
Camperworld • Closest dive site to USU (half an hour drive west) • Geothermally heated: great in the winter (water about 92 degrees), closed during summer • Two ponds: “Indian Springs” is smaller but clearer water (to about 15 feet visiblity). Max depth about 22 feet in each. • Admission: $8 for certified divers (need dive insurance?), $15 for dive class members. • Life: few aquatic plants, snails, and small fish. • Overall: murky water, but very convenient (and warm) place for winter diving. Common dive site for checkout dives
Bear Lake • Relatively close: a little over an hour to Cisco Beach (the dive site) on the eastern shore. • Warm enough to dive June to October (with thick wetsuit). Visibility ~30 feet • Day use fee ($?) or camp overnight ($10) • Short walk to a rocky shore entry. Quick drop-off to beyond recreational limits. Use a dive flag. • Small “caves”, some fish (trout, carp, sculpin) • Overall: convenient dive site if you have appropriate thermal gear.
Homestead Crater • Busiest dive site in Utah. Located in Midway, near Heber (2½ hour drive) • Geothermally heated: ~95 degrees all year (no wetsuit needed). • Neat dive site: through a cave, inside a small mountain. 60’ deep, visibility ~40 feet. Swim-thrus and other things suspended. Gear rental available on site. • Admission: $22/$27 (weekdays/weekends, register well in advance of trip). • Life: none • Overall: Definitely dive it once. Popular for check out dives.
Bonneville Seabase • Most interesting Utah dive site? • Water temp varies with season: dive during summer best (may still want wetsuit). Poor visibility (~3 feet). Gear rental available. • Several interconnected ponds stocked with tropical fish (bring romaine lettuce), including 2 nurse sharks. • Admission: $15 (call in advance). • Overall: Definitely dive it once, and make sure you find the sharks.
Blue Lake • Long drive (~4 hours): out Hwy 80, near Wendover. Dirt road. • Geothermally heated (~70 degrees, likely want wetsuit). Gets warmer toward hot pots on bottom. Vis: 15 ft. Depth: 50 feet. Small dock, some metal sculptures underwater. Nearest facilities (lodging/food) in Wendover. • Life: fish relatively common • Overall, nice dive site, but no shops nearby for rental or fills and it’s very far away.
