Indiana UniversityFootball UNIT MEETING 1DAY 1 INSTALLATION
Seven Man Front Concept • Installing 7 man front concepts. We will disguise everything we do as a defense from a Cover 2 Shell. This will put pressure on the offense to read us on the run. We will always be moving and stemming to different coverages.
Installing 2 Gap System STRENGTHS: 1. Control the LOS (90% = WIN) with Seven Up Front. 2. Play combination coverages behind it (Bracket inside/outside skill receivers) because we have seven to control front. 3. Defends the pass better, helps prevent breakout plays because of two high safeties. WEAKNESSES: 1. Linebackers have 2 gap run responsibility front side and cutback. 2. Need to move front to help with gaps and control cutback lanes. 3. Lose the 8th defender in the core.
Double-Digit System Play first digit vs. Pro sets and to our second digit to Twin sets based on personnel, down & distance and formation tendencies. Double Coverage Calls
SINGLE DIGIT COVERAGE CALLS • Installing single digit coverage system. This allows us to stay in a coverage to all formations. This also allows us to get into an 8 man front concept vs 2-Back Twin Formations, while still playing Cover 2.
Installing Zero Pressures STRENGTHS: 1. Add seventh (eighth) man to the rush (always have 1 free) 2. Force quick throw. 3. Force QB’s awareness of pressure. 4. Helps on run! 10 (9) men front! 5. Defense dictates the tempo! WEAKNESSES: 1. No help high or low. 2. No back stop.
Installing Zone Pressures STRENGTHS: 1. Adds a fifth man to the rush. 2. Overloads one side of the formation. 3. We match up with hot routes inside-out! 4. It is a great way to get off the field on 3rd and long. (quick throw, make the tackle). WEAKNESSES: 1. You must first play run or you can get creased on run. 2. Void both flats in the passing game (3 under/3 deep). 3. Can still be picked up with 5 man protections. 4. Dropping your best pass rushers and blitzing your best cover guys.
Line Stunts Why Line Stunts? • Gives the defensive lineman a three way go! • Cancels A gap for the LB in a 7-man front! • Tougher to block moving target! Weakness of Line Stunts • If they hit it right, we could get creased. • If dropback pass, sometimes you are sending your best pass rushers down inside.
QT 1. QT * This is the same concept as the Pirate * Can be run out of Over or Under RUN TO: * 3-Tech - Loop step widen to outside shoulder of the OT. CANNOT be reached. Get upfield turn all plays back inside. * Nose - (Cheat Weak). Think Center reach. Jab step into A Gap. Read Center. If he is upfield, get ready for Guard to cut you. FLATTEN. * End - Come inside right now ! Key center. Look for Center and collision. Disrupt & play football. RUN AWAY: * 3-Tech - Widen, Go to outside shoulder of OT come off tight behind him. You become trail player. Back Door. * Nose - (Cheat Weak). Think Center reach. Jab step into A Gap. Ricochet & Flatten. * End - Come inside right now ! Key center.
QT 1. QT PASS: * 3-Tech - Widen, go to slap/rip on Guard. Vs. Pass go to shoulder of OT. If he clamps down, cross face. Turns into T/E Game. * Nose - Cheat weak, think Center reach. Step into A Gap. If Hi Hat, stop & wrap OT & end. (T/E Nose) * End - Take jab step upfield & plant outside foot & break to A Gap. Turns into T/E Game.
WIDE TIN • 3 MAN GAME • 3 TECH -Get off, step and gain ground with near foot. Slap/Swim/Rip inside. Turn your shoulders, key center. LOOK AT CENTER, if slide away, push off his back and ricochet off his back up-field. If blocks to you, cross face, be disruptive. • NOSE -Get off, threaten center to bubble side. Flash and fake, loop tight off of 3-tech tail (No Light). Go to first daylight, maybe wrapping 3-tech or DE. • ENDS - Align wide and get off. Work a move a win. If you are aligned to 3-techs side, you have a two-way go.
Flood ConceptMaster Check vs. Trips In any of our base coverages. To any 3 x 1 trips formation, we will master check to flood coverage. This is an overload concept to the trips side. We are playing 5 on 3 with 7 run defenders in the box.
Flood ConceptMaster Check vs. Trips STRENGTHS: 1) Excellent on run 7 defenders in the box. 2) Take pressure off of FS with Mike carrying #3 and backside corner playing M/M. 3) Allows us to re-route receivers aggressively through our zones (buys the rushmen time). WEAKNESSES: 1) Backside corner M/M. 2) Screen weak.
Coaching Points / Rules 1) Field Corner – deep third! 2) Boundary Corner – M/M alignment based on divider split. 3) SS – head up on #2 receiver 2 to 1 / QB Intentions. 4) FS – check flood – MOF deep third defend both seams. 5) Will = cut to #2 receiver / QB Intentions. 6) Mike = wall #3 carry 14 yards / QB Intentions. 7) Sam = SF / QB Intentions. Game plan help with corner. Possible (chk) fin if removed to help corner. 8) Based on QB Intentions looking to 1 WR side = Under coverage weak = WEB
