2. New Assignment • The assignment for the December meeting is “Holidays, Events”: • Photographs dealing with • Holiday Scenes • Decorations • Costumes • Events • Dinners • Parties The Complete Photographer!

3. Low Light Conditions • Many of these photos will be taken under low light conditions • Available light shots: • Large aperture (small f/n) • High ISO • Slower shutter speeds • Supplemental lighting: • On-camera flash • Built-in or shoe-mounted • Multiple flash units • Spotlights The Complete Photographer!

4. Available Light • Use of larger aperture • Reduced depth-of-field • May be too shallow, depending on the scene • Use of high ISO • Most cameras show degradation of image quality at ISO800 and above • Increased noise • Reduced resolution due noise reduction algorithms • Use of slower shutter speeds • Need tripod or stabilized system • No good when there is motion in the scene The Complete Photographer!

5. Supplemental Lighting… • On camera flash is most convenient for indoor shots • Built-in flash has serious limitations • Low power, therefore short range • Can’t bounce • Results in red-eye when person looks at the camera • Shoe-mounted flash is considerably better • Much higher power, can light up bigger room • Most can be pointed in any direction for bounce • Many have zoom that tracks zoom setting of lens • Have both E-TTL and Manual control • Red-eye can be avoided The Complete Photographer!

6. Supplemental Lighting • Biggest problems with single flash… • Light fall-off with distance • People in back may be too dark • Try using bounce flash • Shadows when people are a few feet away from a wall • Worse for shoe-mounted or bracket mounted flash vs built-in flash • Use bounce flash • Use a ring-flash • Get subject to move away from or closer to the wall The Complete Photographer!

7. Ideal Lighting • Though not the most convenient is use of multiple flash units • Overcomes light fall-off with distance • Eliminates shadows • Allows use of smaller apertures to increase DOF • High-end systems support E-TTL to multiple radio linked flash units The Complete Photographer!

8. One More Thing… • If ambient light is at a very different temperature, use a filter on the flash • A warming filter when strong incandescent lights in the room • This will allow the camera’s AWB to compensate correctly The Complete Photographer!

9. Equipment • Any camera, dslr preferred • Wide-angle, Normal, Telephoto lens • f/2.8 to f/1.2 for low available light conditions • Flash, shoe-mounted preferred • Ring flash or multiple units are even better • Tripod for static scenes under low light The Complete Photographer!

14. Those were some Examples(Good and Bad!) • Just watch out for problems, particularly with • Light fall-off / Uneven lighting • Inadequate Depth-Of-Field • Shadows • Red-eye • High noise or poor resolution when using high ISO when not using flash The Complete Photographer!
