Objectives of the Day • Participants will demonstrate their understanding of lesson objectives by creating behavioral objectives. • Participants will be able to analyze the seven Standards for Excellence in Teaching in Prince George’s County Public Schools. • Participants will be able to identify the elements of an effective lesson. (DTA, 5 E’s,) • Participants will be able to define all the components of the observation process.

  2. Classroom Observation • Purposes: • to verify the curriculum being taught • to verify that students are learning the curriculum • to assist and support the teacher as a means of improving instruction • Observation Process: • Pre-Observation Conference • Observation • Teacher provides a written plan for instruction • Follows the Elements of An Effective Lesson • Demonstrates the Standards of Excellence in Teaching • Incorporates the principles of the five Dimensions • of Learning • Evidence of the use of Cooperative Learning Graphic Organizers, MSPAP Strategies, SAT Word of the Day, and/or Manipulatives • Post-Observation Conference

  10. REVISING OBJECTIVES POOR EXAMPLES: IMPROVED EXAMPLES: Students will learn algebra SWAT… Write an essay! I’m going to teach you about some experiences. You’re going to complete a science ditto.

  11. INTRODUCTORY AND DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES The Introductory Activity is the motivation or background-setting activity which prepares the student for the planned lesson.

  12. The Developmental Activities provide information and model the new skill or concept of the lesson.

INTRODUCTORY AND DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES USED TO: MOTIVATE STUDENT ORGANIZED THE LESSON FOCUS ON MASTERY OF LEARNER OUTCOMES DIVIDED INTO: DECLARATIVE (TELLING) CONSTRUCTS MEANING ORANIZES INFORMATION STORES INFORMATION INTO LONG-TERM MEMORY HELPS STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE VALUE AND RELEVANCE OF THE CONTENT PROCEDURAL (DOING/DEMONSTRATING) HELPS STUDENTS MASTER THE SKILLS, PROCESSES, COMPENTENCIES AND PROCEDURES AIDS STUDENTS IN SHAPING THE SKILLS AND PROCESSES OF THE LESSON HELPS STUDENTS INTERNALIZE THE SKILLS

  14. GUIDED PRACTICE ACTIVITIES Guided Practice provides students with an opportunity to apply new skills and/or information. It is the students’ first experience in applying a new skill.

  15. INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES/MEANINGFUL-USE TASK Independent Practice gives students opportunities to apply skills or knowledge own their own. Ex. Have the students to locate news stories demonstrating evidence of either support or violation of the Bill of Rights. If students are do not have access to a newspaper or Internet, xerox copies of a variety of news stories for students to select form.

  16. Assessment • Must be done everyday • Must assess the day’s stated objective • Does not have to be a written test of quiz • May not serve as an independent activity.
