  2. Objectives • Find books and journals on the Newton catalogue • Find journal articles online • Decipher what’s on your reading list • Cope with incomplete references • Save time and frustration!

  5. Too much information?

  6. Too much information? • 5 million+ records in ‘UL and dependents’ section alone! • Searching for science (or any single common word) as a keyword yields more than 10,000 results • Result: frustration

  7. Solution: narrow your search It’s often worth taking a moment to choose a more specific search option

  8. Can’t find anything?

  9. Can’t find anything? • Basic Title search requires precise entries: getting a word or a letter wrong will cause your search to fail • Newton won’t suggest alternative spellings if you make a typo • Result: frustration

  10. Solution: broaden your search Use the ‘Advanced’ grid to fill in terms you’re sure of in any order

  13. Books vs. chapters On Newton you need to look for the book title, not the chapter details • Look for impact of ICT on literacy education, not ‘ICT and moving image literacy in English’ • Don’t include initial articles such as ‘the’ or ‘a’ (or ‘il’, ‘le’, ‘der’ …) in a title search

  21. Check the date you need • The University may buy the same eJournal title from more than one supplier • Date ranges may vary with the supplier! Choose the link that gives you the correct year
