  1. Study Skills How to conquer your study stress.

  2. School Survival Skills • GET ORGANIZED! • Have a place to study. • Develop a system to keep track of important papers. • Use a planner to keep track of assignments. • Estimate how long each assignment will take. • Break big projects into smaller ones.

  3. Studying for Tests • Rereading is not learning • practice active learning • highlighting notes, marking key textbook passages, making study cards, and/or mapping and diagramming concepts • Find your productive time of the day • Find ways to memorize important information • Make the most of your time • Knows the basics • DE-STRESS

  4. Improve Study Skills • Appropriate study environment • Calm attitude • Good notes and attention in class • Effective memorization methods • Effective time management • Buddy Study • Crucial essay writing skills

  5. Develop effective methods • practice with flashcards; • ask someone to quiz you; • read; reread; and highlight your notes; • summarize; read your notes; read your notes aloud; • organize your papers so you are working with everything you need; • outline or make a graphic version of written work (lists, columns, Venn diagrams, etc.); • quiz yourself; • write memory work over and over until you feel confident;

  6. Develop effective methods continued… • use a worksheet as a quiz by covering over the answers and re-doing it; • look over old quizzes and try to figure out where you're making mistakes; • look over the returned assignments for the unit; • Check your teacher’s website for study guides and test tips • tell someone else what the topic is about; • look up the parts of the assignments that you didn't understand the first time.

  7. Website Resources • www.quizlet.com • www.flashcardmachine.com • http://www.superteachertools.com/jeopardy/ • https://jeopardylabs.com/

  8. Tips and Tricks • Build the study guide as you learn. Don’t wait until the week of the test. • Quizlet has a free AP that helps track your mastery of the information. • Make vocabulary flash cards • Check teacher websites for updates on tests and quizzes. • Rereading notes is not an effective way to study.

  9. Things for parents to remember • Tests at this level are not going to be too specific. Example: We don’t want your child to memorize exactly how many islands are part of the Spice Islands; we want them to know the importance of that area and where it’s located. • Students should not study hour after hour for a test. Study a bit each night and then review the information the week of the test. • Not all information covered in class will be on the test. • If you have a question about the information please ask your child’s teacher and check their website. • Trust your child’s knowledge of the information.

  10. Effective time management • Target the areas that need study • Assess your strengths and weaknesses • Distribute your time accordingly
