Think About It • “ Passive resistance is a method of securing rights by personal suffering; it is the reverse of resistance by arms. When I refuse to do a thing that is repugnant to my conscience, I use south-force.” Gandhi 1938
EQ • EQ: Is passive resistance always the best solution to conflict?
British Rule • British took control of India had great ports for trade. • Brought railroads, telegraph lines, opened schools, English language helped unify the subcontinent. • But..taxes, no village industries. • British owned the land. Goal was to educated young Indians the Western Ways. • But they Indians would learn one thing…independence.
Pressure • Indians formed the Indian National Congress in 1885. • Goal was to gain independence • Anyone who went against British was sent to jail.
Mohandas Gandhi • Educated man went to law school in England • Traveled to South Africa and saw how white South Africans treated blacks and Indians. • AGAINST harsh racial laws • Wanted justice but knew British were more “powerful.” • Used nonviolent resistance: peaceful protesting • Self Sacrifice
Gandhi in India • Gandhi believed the injustice of colonial rule would be exposed by displays of Indian sacrifice. • Famous for the “Salt march” • Nonviolent boycotts on goods • While in jail he refused to eat, people learned about his sufferings through the news paper. • By 1945 Britain recognized India as an independent nation.
Outcome • Gandhi believed all South Asians should live peacefully. • But there was disagreements between the Muslims and Hindus. • Violence increased and India divided (partition). • Partition: to break apart • Gandhi was shot in 1948 by a Hindu extremist who stated Gandhi agreed with Muslims too much. • Death
