Survey • Survey period: March 8-14, 2007 • 28 institutions participated • 26 from U.S.,2 outside of U.S • 16 institutions do NOT have either a Korean studies librarian or a Korean collection which has more than 50,000 Korean books
Collection Size <Non Major Korean Collections> *Two libraries did not respond to this question
Film Usage • Only 8 libraries mentioned “Film studies” as one of fields for which Korean Films are used • Film is not only used for films studies; broadly used by other subject fields • Language / Literature / History / Cultural studies / Anthropology / Sociology / Political Science / International Relations / Media Studies / East Asian Film series
Genre • Most show preference toward South Korean feature film (“Korean wave”) • Some libraries choose genres selectively such as documentaries only, or North Korean films only • 21 libraries are willing to develop more than three Korean film genres • Other genre: Korean Animation
Cataloging Practice • Media librarian catalogs most Korean films if there is no Korean language specialist • Collaborative work: Korean language specialist gives assistance to Media librarian • Division of Labor: Original cataloging is done by the Korean subject specialist and copy cataloging by the media librarian
Holdings location • 22 libraries house Korean films at Media Libraries or Departmental libraries (Cinema Collection), Not East Asian library • Currently 6 libraries house Films in the East Asian library • 3 libraries send (VHS only) or plan to send Korean films to library storage
Challenges • Regional codes • Short in-stock availability • Security (lost items) • User education (search issue) • Insufficient shelving space
