The Allies Forge Ahead • 1942-1943 Turning Point of the War • Allies pushing back Axis • Battle of The Coral Sea • First Major Japanese Loss Against USA • Battle of Midway June 1942 (Axis defeated) • Almost entirely fought in the Air • 1942 The “Big Three” (Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin) focus war on Europe, put Asia on the back burner
The Allies Forge Ahead • Stalin wanted to fight two front war against Germany. • Refused, not enough resources say Stalin and Roosevelt. • July 1943 British and America launch first attack on Sicily, defeating Italian forces. • Germans are defeated at Stalingrad • Stalin defended in namesake city, in every house. • Hitler suffered heavy losses at Stalingrad.
The Allies Push Toward Germany • On June 6, 1944, the allies stormed Franceat Normandy. • Now known as D-Day. • The night before, troops were dropped over enemy lines. • Allied ships carried 156,000 troops at dawn. • Germans are now under constant bombing. • The allies’ point was to shut down all German industry, decrease German morale. It worked well. • Hamburg was rubbalized in the space of 10 days, killing 40.000 civilians
