Stanza One • The tide rises, the tide falls, The twilight darkens, the curlew calls: Along the sea-sands damp and brown The traveler hastens towards the town, And the tide rises, the tide falls. • Someone dying may come to reality that death is natural. And the only thing you can do is accept it, because you can’t avoid death.

  3. Stanza Two • Darkness settles on roofs and walls, But the sea, the sea in the the darkness calls: The little waves, with their soft, white hands, Efface the footprints in the sands, And the tide rises, the tide falls. • Your death may affect people for a certain amount of time. The footprints being washed away symbolizes how easily you may be forgotten after death.

Stanza Three • The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls; The day returns, but nevermore Returns the traveler to the shore, And the tide rises, the tide falls. • Whether you’re here on this Earth or not life will continue with or without you. The day returns, but nevermore returns the traveler symbolizes that death has called him home, and he will never return to the shore.

  5. symbolism • The traveler is any person. • The tide is the continuation of time. • The journey of the traveler is life as we live it.

  6. Meaning • The poem refers to the essence of time in relation to your own life span. • “The traveler hastens towards the town” could mean that people are always trying to avoid death.
