Presentation to senators7th March 2012 By Joanna McMinn, Shirley Graham, Catherine O’Rourke, Claire Hackett
Joanna • Hanna’s House was inspired by Hanna Sheehy Skeffington • Development of Hanna’s House. • Current peace building project. • Currently doing work on UNSCR 1325 • hand over to Shirley to explain further.
Shirley • What is UN1325 ? • Main elements of 1325. • When it was passed and adopted by British and Irish governments. • Both governments have NAPs but don’t refer to conflict on these islands. The unilateral approach makes the conflict disappear. • Hanna’s House advocates a bi-lateral approach like the GFA – handover to Catherine to explain further.
Catherine • Main provisions of GFA including specific references to women and various mechanisms and councils. • UNSCR1325 was not in place at the time of GFA • Hanna’s House ask what would GFA have looked like if UNSCR 1325 had been in place? • Hanna’s House advocate bringing a GFA approach to implementation of 1325 and make it relevant to the conflict. • Handover to Claire to explain what this could mean in practice.
Claire • Two ways to bring GFA and UNSCR 1325 together. • First bring 1325 into the GFA mechanisms – example of health provision • Second have a bi-national approach to UNSCR 1325 implementation plan/s – examples
Joanna • Over to you. Do you have any feedback and advice on presentation? • How could you take this forward? • Thank you for your attendance.
