  5. The West: Texas Revolution To demonstrate understanding of the events of the Texas Revolution, fill out the six boxes, with title and visual, for the following slides

  6. The West: Texas Revolution Event 1 In 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla rallied 80,000 poor native and mestizos in a revolt against the Spanish authorities. This marked the beginning of the Mexican Revolution against Spain. Father Miguel died, but after 11 years, Mexico gained independence. Texas

  7. The West: Texas Revolution Event 1 Since Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, the region of Texas was part of Mexican Territory. Mexico provided land for anyone who would settle areas of Texas. This invitation brought many Americans to the region. Texas

  8. The West: Texas Revolution Event 2 Mexico hired land agents called Empresarios to recruit settlers to the Texas territory. Empresarios were given free land for their recruitment efforts. However, rules were in place for all settlers. One of those rules was that slavery was not allowed. Texas

  9. The West: Texas Revolution Event 3 Since many settlers that were coming to Texas were already owners of slaves in the United States, they often brought their slaves with them, in defiance of Mexican laws and regulations. Texas

  10. The West: Texas Revolution Event 3 Steven F. Austin was one such Empresario that brought slave-owning settlers. Squatters were also settling on the land without permission. These circumstances resulted in the Mexican government banning American settlers in 1830. Texas

  11. The West: Texas Revolution Event 4 Americans now living in Texas were numerous, and after the Mexican ban on future settlement, they declared independence from Mexico and wrote a constitution (modeled after the U.S. Constitution) for the newly declared Republic of Texas. Texas

  12. The West: Texas Revolution Event 5 Fighting began in 1836 after Texas declared Independence. One major battle happened at the Alamo near San Antonio Texas. It was a Catholic Mission turned into a fort. The Texans defended the Alamo but were overrun after days of fighting. Texas

  13. The West: Texas Revolution Event 5 Fighting also took place at the Battle of Goliad. Again, Mexican forces were victorious. At both the Alamo and Goliad, Mexico executed all of the surrendering survivors. Texas

  14. The West: Texas Revolution Event 6 Texan leader Sam Houston rallied more Texans to attack the Mexican army, led by General Santa Anna. while it camped near San Jacinto. Santa Anna had foolishly separated his forces to pursue the Texans. Texas

  15. The West: Texas Revolution Event 6 The Mexicans were defeated in just 18 minutes at the Battle of San Jacinto. In his pre-battle speech, Houston reminded the Texans of what happened at the Alamo and of the slaughter at Goliad. Their battle cry was: “REMEMBER THE ALAMO! REMEMBER GOLIAD!” Texas

  16. The West: Texas Revolution Event 6 The Texans forced General Santa Anna to sign the treaty which granted Texan Independence and recognized Texas as a sovereign nation. Santa Anna had no choice but to cooperate. Texas
